Double glazing puts two panes with a sealed, gas-filled cavity between them in place of a single sheet, which cuts the heat moving through the window by roughly half and takes a meaningful bite out of external noise. How we approach double glazing
Retrofit into existing frames
If your frames are sound and the rebate is deep enough, a sealed double glazed unit can often go into the existing frame. That avoids replacing the whole window, avoids disturbing the render or architraves, and typically costs a fraction of full window replacement. Not every frame suits it — shallow older aluminium sections often do not — so we assess before promising it.
Heat, and where it actually goes
Windows are the weakest thermal point in most Australian homes, and a large share of heating and cooling energy moves straight through them. Double glazing roughly halves that. Pairing it with a low-E coating on the west-facing glass is what makes the biggest single difference to a hot afternoon in a west-facing living room.
Noise
For traffic and rail noise the cavity helps, but the bigger gain comes from making the two panes different thicknesses and using an acoustic laminated pane on one side — that stops both panes resonating at the same frequency. Along the Princes Highway corridor and the Pakenham rail line, this is the specification worth paying for.
Condensation
Winter condensation forms because the inside face of a single pane drops to the outdoor temperature. Double glazing keeps that inner surface far warmer, so the moisture stays in the air rather than pooling on the sill. For homes with recurring mould on window reveals this is often the real motivation.
Doing it in stages
Whole-house double glazing is a significant investment. It is entirely reasonable to start with the rooms that actually bother you — usually the western living areas and the bedrooms facing the road — and continue later. Replacing failed units
If existing double glazing has fogged internally, the seal has failed and the insulating value has gone with it. The unit is replaced into the existing frame as a straightforward job — no need to replace the window.
