A sliding door that needs a shoulder is one of the most common calls we get, and it is one of the few jobs where acting early genuinely halves the price. Here is why.
What is actually happening
A sliding door panel is heavy — a large stacker panel can be well over 60kg — and its entire weight sits on two small rollers running in an aluminium track. Those rollers have bearings, and bearings wear out. Grit blown into the track accelerates it, and salt air along Western Port accelerates it further.
As the rollers collapse, the panel drops. Once it drops far enough, the bottom of the door frame is no longer riding on the rollers — it is dragging directly on the aluminium track.
Why waiting doubles the job
Aluminium is soft. A heavy door dragging on it does not take long to wear a groove into the top of the track, and once that groove exists, new rollers will not fix the door — they will sit in the groove and the door will still catch and drag.
At that point the track has to be re-capped with a stainless steel insert, which means removing the door, machining or fitting over the damaged track, and reinstalling. It is roughly double the cost of a roller replacement caught in time.
So the practical advice is simple: if the door is getting harder to open, get it looked at while it is still just harder to open.
Things people try first that do not work
- Spraying lubricant into the track. It helps for a week, then attracts more grit and makes it worse. It does nothing for a failed bearing.
- Adjusting the roller height screws. Worth doing if the rollers are sound, but if the bearing has failed, adjustment just lifts a broken roller.
- Cleaning the track. Genuinely worth doing as maintenance, and it will extend roller life — but it will not revive a roller that has already collapsed.
What a proper repair involves
The door comes out, the old rollers come off, and new rollers rated for the panel weight go in. Weight rating matters — cheap generic rollers under a heavy stacker panel will fail again within a couple of years, which is why we fit rollers matched to the door.
While the door is out, it is the cheapest possible moment to deal with anything else: the track gets cleaned properly, worn weather seals and brush strips get replaced, and the lock and handle can be sorted if they are also tired. Doing it all in one visit avoids paying for a second call-out later.
Most sliding door roller replacements are a straightforward job of an hour or two. It is one of the most satisfying repairs we do, because a door that has needed two hands for years suddenly moves with one finger.
